Yoga for Bone and Joint Health mini series

Our bones and joints literally support us our whole lives. As they bear our weight, they also bear the brunt of all the twists and turns that come our way. The longer we live, the more likely we are to accumulate pain and dysfunction. Osteoporosis, arthritis, joint pain and reduced range of motion are common “blessings” of longevity.

While our genetics can make us more susceptible to bone and joint problems, the way we move has tremendous power to prevent or relieve them. In this new 6-week series, physical therapist and yoga teacher Becky Liston will share yoga practices designed to help strengthen bones, expand stable joint range of movement, and relieve musculoskeletal pain. The program is informed by Loren Fishman's yoga for osteoporosis research, as well as her 20+ years of professional practice.

This class is appropriate for all ages and levels of experience. Modifications will be given to increase or decrease your challenge.

Students can attend on Zoom or in Becky’s private yoga studio in downtown Evanston. All classes will be recorded and shared for 30 days, so you can still attend if the day and time don’t work for your schedule.

Cost: $45 for 2 weeks / single class $25

Members save 15%; sliding scale freely offered.

Note: Reserving a single class is difficult through www.gratefulyoga.com. If you can't find the date you want, just pay for the single class then email info@gratefulyoga.com with the date you wish to attend

Yoga for Bone Health

YOGA FOR BONE HEALTH: STRENGTH, POSTURE AND BALANCE (ZOOM ONLY)WITH BECKY PAULIN-LISTON, PT

Mon Date: March 21- April 4 From: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

We are living longer lives, which means we are likely to encounter one or more health concerns associated with normal aging. There is growing interesting in finding ways to address these conditions without relying solely on medication.

Loren Fishman, MD together with yoga therapist Ellen Saltonstall are pioneers in using yoga to improve bone health. They have conducted research that demonstrates a clear correlation between regular yoga practice and improved bone density without the side effects of many osteoporosis medications.

In this Zoom series, you will learn 12 poses that have shown to support bone health in Dr. Fishman's research. The postures will be adapted to make them accessible to all levels and abilities, with a focus on establishing a strong independent practice for you to continue at home.

You will learn the practice from yoga teacher and physical therapist Becky Paulin-Liston, who is certified by Loren and Ellen in this approach.

"Becky's knowledge of osteoporosis and osteopenia, anatomy, and yoga are very thorough and she explains the relationships among them very clearly. It all made sense and gave me a practical understanding of how to improve and sustain my bone density during yoga practice. I especially enjoyed her workshop approach, where she showed us modifications to the poses to fit our specific needs and gave us individual feedback and adjustments."

- Alice Dunlap-Kraft

All classes are recorded and available for streaming for 30 days afterwards.  No class on March 21 for spring break.

Cost: $130 for 6 weeks; members save 15%. Drop-ins are available with instructor permission.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with the 12 pose sequence shown in this video is recommended prior to taking the class. If you do not feel confident about these basic poses, please contact the instructor to determine whether it will be helpful to schedule a private/semi-private session prior to the start of class.

Movement and Meditation Through the Chakras A Seven Week Journey to Recharge and Reconnect

Join Becky Liston, PT, RYT and Sarah McLaughlin, LMT, RYT on a seven week journey of yoga, meditation, and breath work.

This class will dedicate one week to each chakra and explore its expression through guided movement and mediation practices. If you're not familiar with chakras or yoga--no problem! This class is for any experience level.

While the word 'chakra' can feel mysterious, it's really a word that describes the meeting point of the external and internal worlds--physical and emotional--mind and body. Anodea Judith defines a chakra as: a center of organization for the reception, assimilation, and expression of lifeforce energy. In this class, we will explore this connection by moving our bodies and also through the stillness of contemplation.

Beginning April 14th, there will be one live class per week on Tuesdays 5:30-6:30pm. Classes will be recorded if you are unable to attend. You will also receive at least two emails per week with additional guidance and insight into that week's chakra.

Cost is $20 per drop in class, or $130 for the full seven weeks if paid in advance. If you are experiencing financial difficulty, please just let me know and we will work with you. No one will be turned away from this class due to an inability to pay. Likewise, if you have the financial means and would like to gift this class to someone, please let us know.

Payment can be made via:

  • Zelle: my Zelle "name" is my phone number-- 773-875-0103

  • Venmo: Sarah McLaughlin@SarahDanny

  • Paypalabhayabodywork@gmail.com ***(We pay a fee for PayPal and Square, so the first two methods are preferred)***

  • Square: I am also happy to email you an invoice that you can pay online.

Becky is a physical therapist and yoga instructor. She has always worked to build community and connection with her patients and within herself.
